I-O Today

Organization of I-O Psychology

Today, I-O psychologists have an international organization known as the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP). SIOP helps to guide research as well as applied activities by publishing a newsletter and journal, as well holding yearly conferences. Additionally, I-O psychology is officially recognized as division 14 of the American Psychological Association (APA).

I-O Psychology in Business

Today, many businesses, including Fortune 500 companies and smaller organizations, use internal and external consultants trained in I-O psychology to select employees more accurately and streamline business practices. Additionally, these consultants work as advisors about the legal system to help businesses ensure that their practices adhere to statutes that deal with discrimination, workplace safety, and other issues. I-O psychologists have even been involved in congressional hearings as expert witnesses. Frequently, I-O psychologists are members of many professional organizations in addition to SIOP, the APA, and/or the American Psychological Society (APS).

I-O Psychology in Academia

Currently, I-O psychology is one of the fastest growing fields in the United States. So, it’s not surprising that there are over 200 graduate programs across the nation for both doctoral and master’s degrees. In addtion to training new I-O psychologists, these programs are on the cutting edge of I-O research fostering the new findings that many applied I-O psychologists use in business applications.
